ADAS calibration after a new windshield: why it matters

The camera behind your mirror reads the road through the glass. Here’s what calibration does and when you need it.

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: features such as lane departure warning, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and collision warnings. On many modern vehicles, the camera that powers these features sits behind the rear-view mirror and looks through the windshield.

Why new glass can mean calibration

When the windshield is replaced, the camera is removed and refitted with the new glass. Even a very small change in its angle can change where the system thinks the lane lines or the car ahead are. Calibration re-aims the camera to the vehicle maker’s specification, so the systems behave the way they were designed to.

Static and dynamic calibration

  • Static. The vehicle is parked and the camera is aimed at targets placed at measured distances, following the vehicle maker’s procedure.
  • Dynamic. The camera is calibrated while the vehicle is driven under set conditions, using a scan tool to guide the process.

Some vehicles need one, some need the other, and some need both. Which applies depends on your exact vehicle, which is why we ask for your VIN.

Signs your camera may need attention

  • A warning light or a message that a driver-assist feature is unavailable
  • Lane keeping that pulls toward one side or reacts late
  • Collision warnings that trigger when nothing is there

If you notice any of these after a windshield replacement, have the system checked before relying on it.

Is calibration covered by insurance?

Many insurers include calibration with a covered windshield replacement, but policies differ, so ask your agent. When you request a quote, tell us if your vehicle has driver-assist features and we’ll include what it needs.
